At the invitation of Latter-day Saint Charities, Kim Leishman, Clinical Audiologist, will leave this month with his wife to complete a 6-month mission to Accra, Ghana, in order to continue the training of local medical personnel and to deliver additional donated audiological equipment needed for the Korle Bu Medical Teaching Hospital Audiological Testing unit. Kim will spend his days training local personnel and setting up the Newborn-Infant Hearing Test Program for the 12,000 babies born each year at the teaching hospital.

November 2004
West Africa's Most Advanced Audiological Clinic
The most recent humanitarian mission to Ghana included 29 medical specialists and staff members and over two tons of needed supplies including medical equipment, 3000 hygeine kits, 3000 school bags filled with student supplies, 1000 children's books and three pallets of nutritional supplements, graciously donated by ICON Health and Fitness of Logan, Utah. Donations also included an Audiological Sound booth complete with all necessary hearing testing equipment for the Korle Bu Medical Teaching Hospital in the city of Accra. Partnering with Latter-day Saint Charities, America Helps Team Members assembled a research-grade audiological hearing test sound booth and trained local medical specialists in hearing testing and hearing aid fitting and adjustments.
Complete Otoacoustic (OAE) and Acoustic Brainwave Response (ABR) equipment and training was also provided as a foundation for the first newborn-infant hearing test program in West Africa.
On-going humanitarian efforts include more advanced personnel training as well as setting up a complete hearing aid earmold laboratory.
Under the direction of Dr. Kitcher, ENT Department Head at Korle Bu Medical Teaching Hospital, the new hospital Hearing Clinic construction was recently completed. With the addition of the equipment and training provided by AMERICA HELPS, and Latter-day Saint Charities, the Clinic will be able to provide full audiological test and rehabilitation services to the greater Accra area.
It is the vision of AMERICA HELPS and Dr. Kitcher, that this foundational clinic will provide the necessary training and equipment to ultimately provide services throughout the nation.
During the same mission, medical and hearing clinics were held in the cities of Accra, Attua, Abumusu and Tima, which also included a clinic at the Deaf School.
300 hearing aids were fit on children and adults and Dr. Horsely provided necessary expertise in the difficulty birth of a healthy baby.
